A “craicing” time in Cork
Craic is an Irish word for fun or enjoyment. This is what we experienced on our language trip to Ireland. With its impressive landscape and unique culture, the emerald isle was also the destination of the language trip by Year 6 just before breaking up for the summer. Our main location for the week was Cork, Ireland’s second biggest city situated on the Southern coast, where the students stayed with host families and attended English classes in the morning.
At the weekend and in the afternoons there was plenty of time left to get out and about and discover the region. The most memorable highlights of our excursions were a visit to the Jameson Whiskey distillery, the exploration of the nearby harbour Cobh, a coach trip along the Ring of Kerry (a peninsula with striking bays and beautiful headlands), a guided tour of the old University of Cork and a coastal walk to Charles Fort.
It was both interesting and enriching to get in touch with the Irish way of life, with some sides of the country’s varied past and with the island’s extraordinarily unspoilt nature. By the end of the week we had even started to make more sense of the Irish accent!
