Warming up …. for the finals in English: Part 1
In our pool session on October 16th, students from year eight faced an intriguing challenge – they had to create an increased awareness of their level of competence concerning two skills: Reading Comprehension and Language in Use. Furthermore, they were encouraged to reactivate their knowledge of text types that will feature prominently in the final exam as well as to develop effective strategies of how to improve their skills.
From now on, there will be a reading corner in class where students will have the opportunity to read authentic articles taken from English and American newspapers. This will hopefully help students to absorb vocabulary as a “pleasant side effect”. This morning the articles were dedicated to the topic of our previous lessons – gender issues. Needless to say, a wealth of words contributes largely to perform successfully in a foreign language; therefore, our students have to come up with personalized “word treasure boxes” including all the words that have “vanished into thin air” for some reason or other or they might simply need to revise or remember!
As William Shakespeare, the most famous English writer of all times, said “All things are ready, if our minds be so”. Accordingly, we do hope that the basis has been laid for a successful performance of each student in the final written exam.
