Be a fan – Special Olympics Idaho
"Be a fan" – this was the slogan of the Special Olympics Invitational Winter Games 2008 in Idaho. And I can tell you, I was a fan. From Monday the 25th of February to Thursday the 28th of February more than 450 athletes from all over the world participated in the Special Olympics and tried to win a medal. My aunt, who has Down Syndrom, was one of the athletes and therefore I got the chance to accompany the Austrian team.
The most impressive experience was definitely the Opening Ceremony in Boise. The event was filled with inspirational words of courage, determination and dignity as the some 450 athletes packed the house with smiling faces and hearts overflowing with pride.
After the ceremony we went to the winter sports resort Sun Valley because the competitions for cross-country skiing took place there. I cheered for the Austrian Team and it was great to see how happy the athletes were to take part in the Special Olympics.
In the end our four athletes were pleased about five gold and two silver medals.
I spent an emotional and exciting week with the Austrian cross-country skiers and really enjoyed to be a fan.
